Cow/Bull Shamanic Power Animal Drumming Mask

The Cow/Bull Shamanic Drumming Mask is a powerful exploration of grounded strength, nourishment, embodiment, boundaries, patience, and sacred vitality.

For me, the mask is more than an artistic object. It becomes a portal for expression—a way to step outside the ordinary identity and safely explore another aspect of the self through movement, sound, improvisation, ritual, and play.

Cow medicine reminds us of nurturing, patience, nourishment, steadiness, and receiving. Bull medicine brings strength, determination, protection, vitality, and the courage to stand firmly in one’s own ground.

This can be especially meaningful for people who have learned through trauma to become small, silent, compliant, hypervigilant, or disconnected from their bodies.

For people working with PTSD or CPTSD, inner-child wounds, grief, shutdown, anxiety, neurodivergence, autism, or difficulty expressing emotions, mask work can provide a playful, symbolic container for trying on a different way of being.

You don’t have to explain everything you feel.

You can move it. Drum it. Breathe it. Make sound. Become the Bull. Become the Cow.

For neurodivergent individuals, the repetitive rhythm of drumming and predictable movement may also provide a structured sensory and expressive activity. For trauma survivors, the emphasis should remain on choice, safety, consent, and staying within one’s own window of tolerance. This is not a replacement for professional medical or mental-health treatment, but it can be incorporated into expressive, somatic, or creative practices.

🥁 DRUMMING EXERCISE: “I STAND MY GROUND”

Begin with a slow heartbeat rhythm:

BOOM… pause… BOOM… pause…

Place your feet firmly on the ground.

With each beat say:

“I am here.”
“I am safe in this moment.”
“I have a right to take up space.”
“My strength belongs to me.”

Then gradually increase the rhythm.

Imagine the Bull walking forward—not attacking, not fighting—simply refusing to abandon its ground.

“I stand.I breathe.I belong.I am powerful without violence.I am strong without hardness.I choose where my energy goes.”

🐄 COW HEART MANTRA

Slow the drum again.

“I nourish myself.I receive.I soften without surrendering myself.I give from abundance, not depletion.”

The greatest lesson of Cow and Bull medicine may be this:

You can be gentle without being weak.You can be powerful without being destructive.You can nurture others without abandoning yourself.

The mask gives the inner child, the wounded self, the neurodivergent self, and the survivor self another language:

movement, rhythm, imagination, play, and embodied choice.

And sometimes healing begins when we finally discover that we are allowed to stand our ground and dance while doing it.
